January 2010 Earnings:
Earnings for the eighth month of The Residual Income Challenge were down to extremely low levels. I really lost focus the second half of the month as I worked over time at work nearly every day. Because of this, the amount of total hours spent writing for the month was the lowest ever. None of this is a good enough excuse since my motto is "doing a little bit of something is better than nothing". I needed to average $9.79 per day in residual income to stay on pace, but I only managed to earn exactly $1.03 per day. That's a big difference of $8.79 per day, or $272.49 for the entire month.
January Vs. December:
For the month of January, I earned $31.93. This now takes the place of November as my worst month of residual income. eHow earnings failed to keep pace with my increase in articles. I increased my article base by about 30% over the past two months, but my earnings have stayed at the same level. Examiner earnings also took a huge dive, but I only wrote 2 new articles in January.
Current Residual Income Opportunities:
I haven't added any new opportunities lately. I definitely need to get on this. For my next opportunity, I want to find a place that I can write about anything without it being stock market related or how to related. I might check out Bukisa or Associated Content next. If you have any suggestions or thoughts on these sites please let me know.
Residual Income Breakdown:
Like I said, my residual income was extremely low for the month. eHow is the only site that seemed to maintain, but it was low considering I have increased my article base significantly. I have written 5 of the 10 articles I planned to write on Infobarrel. My blog was the biggest surprise this month as it earned $1.87 even with my recent neglect.
Here is a breakdown of my January 2010 earnings:
The Examiner: $13.91 (97 Articles)
eHow: $14.51 (47 Articles)
Xomba: $1.52 (83 Xomblurbs, 1 Xombyte)
Residual Income Challenge Blog: $1.87
FireHow: $0.12 (3 Articles)
Total: $31.93
February Goals:
To get back on track! I only spent about 8.5 hours writing last month which is far below my average; and 1/3 the amount of time I should be spending. I need to start writing a couple of articles at The Examiner each week. I don't think the residual income is great there, but I do think it gives great back links to my other articles on other sites. This month I will finish my 10 articles at Infobarrel, write consistently at The Examiner, add a few eHow articles, and find a new writing site to write about other things.

Hey Matt; I've read every post of yours over the past couple months or so and I was wondering if you are doing any article marketing. Considering you have a good amount of articles posted in various places you should be over $31 a month by now.
By article marketing I don't mean Twitter or social bookmarking either. Have you done any backlink building from article directories or niche blogs? Have you done any levels of keyword targeting? I think you can make this work since you've been so consistent over the months.
I agree that you should expect better results at this point. have you built up some backlinks to your blog and eHow articles?
Are you working on any other niche blogs or sites?
Keep at this, it is well worth the effort to build a steady residual income online.
Brian, thanks for following along. I haven't done any backlink building from article directories but I have done a little bit with niche blogs. I haven't done that in about 3 or 4 months though. I link eHow articles into a lot of my examiner articles, and then submit my examiner articles to digg and stumleupon. That's about as far as I have gone lately. Any suggestions on the article directories? I'm not too familiar with them.
Maria, I'm not working on any other niche blogs or sites at the moment. Congratulations on your great success on eHow. You are an inspiration, and proof that writing online can deliver a significant stream of residual income.
Hey Matt, no problem. You're actually doing a really good thing linking sending links from Examiner to eHow that helps the eHow articles and is likely why you are seeing better results at eHow over a longer term.
The article directories are great for the backlinks though too. You can use InfoBarrel as a directory to send links (three at a time) at your other articles and make money at the same time much like with examiner and you can post to true article directories like eZine, GoArticles, and ArticleBalst. Each of these sites let you link to two or three places per article and they all have a track record of authority. Give them a try.
Considering they send a few links per article ten articles on GoArticles sends 30 backlinks to your money making articles on eHow and Examiner or InfoBarrel if you sign up there.
I look forward to hearing more from you; keep up the work. The fact that you've been doing this for so long shows you are disciplined and are capable; I wish the best for you.
Thanks Brian. I will definitely check out the article directories you mentioned. I'm sure if I go back and start doing some backlinking on all of my Infobarrel articles and eHow articles then I will really see a boost in income since it should make them rank higher in the search engines.
I'm trying to stay strong and consistently post new content on the web. Eventually it will all pay off. I checked out your blog as well, doubling your income would be incredible and I hope you make it a reality!
